i am having trouble locating any solid statistics on this issue. i am working on a report about how schools handle bullies and teasing, and i need to track how the columbine shootings (apirl, 1999) have impacted how schools react and what impact that has had on child, preteen, and teenage depression, self mutalation (cutting, etc..) and suicide.
i have tried numerous sources but can't find any solid numbers over any real amount of time?

depression children causes

Will depression really affect the baby?
I am 19 weeks pregnant and severly depressed. My fiance left me shortly after we found out I was pregnant... even though he had earlier expressed that he wanted children. Someone mentioned anti-depressants but arent they for chemical imbalance? Being single again... pregnant.. and having to move back home seems like it could cause depression on its own. People keep telling me that my depression will have negative effects on this baby... I have disconnected from all my friends, barely leave the house, cry constantly, mood swings, no motivation, and constantly feel there is something wrong with the baby. (I still havent felt any movement) Is this normal depression for my situation + pregnancy hormones, or should I look into anti-depressents?
Yes, yes, and yes and maybe.
There is a social, mental (thoughts), and biological aspect to depression.
What you should do is this - get someone to talk to about your depression - a therapist or conselor - and talk to a doctor about your depression as well.

depression children treatment

Have you noticed being treated differently after being labeled a psych patient?
After receiving treatment for severe depression, hospitalized and now on medications, I noticed I don't get treated objectively as I did before. My psychiatrist had warned me that this could happen once doctors can see that I'm being treated for depression. My doctor was right and it has happed yo me a couple of times. The words, " you are just tired and stressed" seems to be happening more and more. Being labeled as mentally ill is by far the most difficult thing to deal with. It's bad enough having depression, but beening treated like a child is even worst.
There is no question in my mind that while a person is hospitalized in a psychiatric unit they are not treated with the same care or respect that a person who is in the hospital for a non-psychiatric condition.
A psychiatric patient's complain won't be listened to and the medical staff knows that. Prisoners on death row have more rights than a psychiatric patient. A prisoner on death row gets one hour everyday to go outside. A psychiatric patient can be held in the hospital 24/7 indefinitely and not be permitted to go outside once.
As far as how a person with mental health problems is treated outside of the hospital depends upon the person you are dealing with. If a person doesn't know about your mental illness, I wouldn't tell them. For people who already know and are saying "you are just tired and stressed", you could simply ignore them or say "I was diagnosed with depression. My condition is more than just being tired and stressed. Please stop minimizing my health problem".
If you can, join a support group. It helps to have people to talk to who are going through the same things as you are.

Does anyone else suffer from post traumatic stress disorder?AnXiety,And depression?
I was wanting to know how you deal with your symptoms~!Sometimes,I really feel like I am gonna go crazy! My mood swings are so so bad sometimes.I have many sleepless nights and nightmares! And I also suffer from AXiety attacks, frequently! They make me feel like I am going to die.Like I can't breathe and my heart starts fluttering like craZy.I try so hard not to take it out on my husband and children and the people around me!But I still do at times.I am already in counseling and taking medications. It helps a little. But my symptoms are really severe.Any suggestions? Thanks in Advance!
I deal with these symptoms everyday. Sleepless nights. Lost jobs. Anxiety attacks. I was also taking it out on my family.
We had a long talk and they understand my illness. I use to take all those pills but not anymore. I turned it all over to God. Yes I still have those really bad days and am not able to work but I am able to have a life now. When it gets really bad I just pick up my Bible and read. Or my family or husband will take me for a ride and get my mind back together it is really hard living this way but have faith there is hope. My family is a big part of me and they are always there to help. The best thing I did was to be open and honest with all of them. I know it is really hard seeing and hearing things and not sure what is going to set you off. All I can say is my husband stood with me and still stands with me through the good and bad times. I have a great doctor and he's understands. You must find one that really understands this illness.

depression in children and adolescent
The Consequences of Feelings of Melancholy in Young Children and Young Adults
Clinical depression is an illness caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make someone constantly feel aloof, sad, negative, and unmotivated. It can last for days, weeks, months, or even years. It can result from anxieties, traumatic situations, or triggered by nothing. Depressive disorder can affect people of any age, including teenagers and even young children.
Children and teens often suffer from depressive disorders, which leaves families with lots of questions such as: what causes it, and what treatments are available? The good news is that depressive disorder is treatable and some of the best depression treatments come in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.
In the past, it was believed that adolescents could not be depressed, but in reality, depression affects people of all ages. Often, depression in young people is triggered by events such as changing schools, a loss in the family, a relationship breakup, illness, or abuse. In some people, depression occurs on its own. Depression often runs in families, meaning mothers and fathers suffering from depression are more likely to have children who also experience depression.
There are several different forms of depression. Most young people with depression have a type of major depression. This depression affects the ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some children and teens may also suffer from a milder type of depression called Dysthymic Disorder, which is a long-term type of depression with milder symptoms than major depressive disorder. A rarer but still common type of depression is manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by mood shifts from extreme sadness to extreme happiness.
Depression can be a serious problem for young people because their symptoms are slightly different from the symptoms adults typically have, making it more challenging to recognize and treat. Often, minors with depression will not seem sad or "depressed" as one would expect in adults. Constant irritability is often one of the major signs of depression in children and teens. Depression symptoms can be subtle, but may include constant sadness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and decreased interest in activities they used to love.
Children with depression may do poorly in school, have problems making friends, or have disciplinary problems. The effects are also evident for teens, who may abuse alcohol and drugs to escape their depression. Depression is no one's fault, but people with depression do have the ability to get treatment and learn how to handle their condition.
Depression help treatments can range from therapy and counseling, to the use of antidepressant medication. Group therapy can be beneficial for teens and older children by providing a safe place to share their feelings with others. Monitored online services such as forums for teen depression can also provide information on depression and serve as an outlet for depressed teens.
Behavioral counseling can help teach people how to handle their depression. Counseling can help parents understand what causes a child's depression. Family counseling helps educate families on depressive disorders and what they can do to help.
In some cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed. This is only done under the supervision of a doctor who will watch the child's health and mental state. Even though people with severe depression may have a need for medications, these drugs can have many side effects, especially in sensitive and still-developing children and teens. This is why psychological therapy, support and understanding from families and professional counselors, and the use of techniques that help children learn how to relieve their depression by themselves are considered better for helping young people with depression.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques can be used to relieve stress, tension, and depression. They help people come up with safe and positive coping strategies for living with depression. It is suitable for all people because it is non-invasive, doesn't call for the use of any drugs, and is a helpful form of self-help.
One NLP technique used to treat depression is called them NLP Flash. This technique reprograms the unconscious mind to use the thoughts that create stress and depression as triggers for thoughts that create relaxation. It is a technique that even children can learn to use to help them manage their depression.
People who are diagnosed with depression can overcome it. Therapy can help depressed people of all ages live better. NLP techniques are wonderful for helping young people and their families cope with tension and depression. These techniques can diminish or even eliminate depression in people of all ages.

depression children divorce

Men and Depression After Divorce
The longitudinal data from the National Population Health Survey showed that men, aged 20-64, were six times more likely to report an episode of depression than men who were still married. Compare that to women, aged 20-64, were only 3.5 times more likely to report depression than women who were married. It seems that being the strong, silent type isn't such a good strategy after all.
Interestingly, the study isolated out factors that could account for depression, such as loss of income, reduced social support and fewer children living in the household, to see if any of these things explained the depression. Even taking those important factors out, men were depressed simply because of the divorce itself. While most people worked through their depression within two years after the break-up, a significant minority were still depressed four years afterwards.
I found it interesting to see that men appear to be hit harder emotionally than women. In my experience, women certainly are more adept and willing to process and express their emotions. The vast majority of my clients are women and many of my coaching colleagues have that experience as well. Men are socialized to be the provider and problem solver of the family. They don't have as extensive a social support network as women to support them in their divorce journey.
We've all heard about how men need to retreat to their "cave" at times. Quite often, men will jump straight into another new relationship as a way to cope with the loss, only to find that the same issues and unresolved needs surface yet again with the new partner. As the saying goes, "If you can't feel it, you can't heal it." Starting a new relationship when you have unhealed emotional wounds is setting you, and your potential partner, up for a rocky ride.
So what's a guy to do? I just so happen to have a few suggestions!
1. Talk It Out
Don't suffer in silence. Reach out and find a "divorce buddy" you can really pour your heart out to. There are support groups specifically for men in many communities now. I just heard of one where every week men of all ages and marital status get together in a park and gather around a campfire, sharing their stories and simply listening to the others. A divorce coach or therapist can be a great resource, too.
2. Take a Time Out
Here's a big tip: Take time to get to know yourself before jumping into the next serious relationship. Like an earthquake, divorce sends shock waves through your entire life. Give yourself time to let any aftershocks settle down before you rush out to lock into a new relationship. Make the investment to heal yourself upfront, and you'll improve your odds of a successful future relationship significantly.
3. Women Love Vulnerable Men
There's nothing more appealing to many women than a man who's willing to be vulnerable and emotionally accessible. Drop the macho "I can tough it out" persona and let us see and feel your heart. Being real and authentic are critical for creating connected, loving relationships.
